THE PROVISION OF CONSULTANCY SERVICES TO SUPPORT THE PREPARATION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE DAR ES SALAAM MARITIME GATEWAY PROGRAM (DMGP)

INTRODUCTION

Dar es Salaam is the largest port in Tanzania and handles over 90% of all import and export volumes for the domestic and transit markets (Malawi, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda). In 2019, the port handled 5,815,818 tons of liquid bulk cargo, 2,416,168 tons of dry bulk cargo, 7,790,965 tons of break bulk cargo, 159,742 vehicles and 716,996 Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) containers. With the exception of liquid bulk cargo and part of the container trade, all of these cargoes are handled on Berths 1-7. Over the past 5-year period, average year on year growth in the dry bulk, break bulk, liquid bulk and vehicle trades was 5%, 8%, 3% and 9% respectively. The overall average cargo traffic year on year growth at Dar esc Salaam port is 6%.
