By Leonard Magomba - Dar es Salaam Port which is Country’s Principal port says is now ready to handle ship as big as to over 305 meters. According to public notice from the Directorate of Marketing and Public Relations of the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), the port’s entrance channel has been dredged to the depth of 15.5 meters chat datum with an average channel width of 200 meters. It further says the turning basin has been widened to a diameter of 520 meters with a water depth of 15.5 meters chat datum. The harbour basin and berths 1-7 have been dredged to 14.5 meters chat datum, while berths 8-11 and the RoRo berth have been dredged to 12.5 meters chat datum. By this modernization means that, the principal port of Dar es Salaam is now ready to handle vessels with a LOA of 305 meters a beam of 40 meters and a draft of 14.5 meters without any tide restrictions. While under restricted tidal conditions, the port can handle vessels with a LOA of 294 meters, a beam of 32 meters and a draft of 13.5 meters at berths 1-7. Dar es Salaam port is the Tanzania principal port with a rated capacity of over 18 million metric tonnes dry cargo and 6.0 million metric tonnes bulk liquid cargo. The Port has a total quay length of about 2,600 metres with twelve deep-water berths including the RoRo berth. The port handles about 95 percent of the Tanzania international trade. It serves the land-linked countries of Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Malawi, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
