Lake Nyasa Port
The major ports in Lake Nyasa are Itungi/Kiwira and Mbamba Bay. Kiwira Port has been established as cargo terminal. It has a jetty and ramp suitable to handle passenger and cargo. The Kiwira Port is equipped with handling machines like mobile crane, fork lifts and grabs. Kiwira Port is a home port for two cargo vessels, MV RUVUMA and MV NJOMBE and one passenger/cargo vessel called MV. MBEYA II which are owned by Tanzania Government.

Details
Mbamba Bay Port has a jetty suitable for light cargo. The port is to be expanded to save an uprising demand especially after the building of new vessels, also the development of Mtwara Corridor

NDUMBI PORT
Details
Ndumbi Port has Jetty, heavy duty pavement, cargo shed, passenger lounge, ramp and other facilities supporting port operations. Ndumbi Port happens to be very important fork point, strategically aimed to save the transportation of coal to Kiwira Port and Malawian ports like Monkey Bay and Chipoka.
ITUNGI PORT
Details
Itungi Port is targeted to be the Passenger Terminal which will also handle light cargoes. The Port has a berth with 70 metres and is the head office of Lake Nyasa ports. It is facing the siltation problem but the controlling mechanism seems to succeed. The Port has a dredging machine which enabled to increase water depth in the entrance channel and at the quay side.

Lake Tanganyika Ports
Lake Tanganyika ports cuts across three regions of Kigoma, Katavi, and Rukwa. The major ports in Lake Tanganyika are the Kigoma port, Kibirizi, Kipili, Kasanga, Kagunga, Kabwe and Kirando. Kigoma port is connected to road and railway in the country and neighboring countries and have many facilities including Weighbridge, Oil tanks, Workshops, and Pasanger Lounge to support various operations within the Lake.

Mtwara and Other Southern Sea Ports
Mtwara port is one of the three major ports managed by Tanzania Ports Authority developed in Southern Tanzania coast near the border with Mozambique. It is geographically located 578 kilometer south of Dar es salaam City. The deep water port at Mtwara was built between 1948 and 1954. Development of the deep water port was accompanied by railway construction from Mtwara to Nachingwea.
Port Characteristics
The deep water quay has a draught of 9.5 to 13.5 metres chart datum, there are no tidal restrictions for vessels entering and leaving the harbor.
Port Facilities
Berth
The port has a quay wall of 685 metres which can accommodate four ships and one coastal vessel at a time. The draught is 9.5-13.5 metres and with the introduction of new and more reliable solar powered navigational aids, the port will be accessible to ships during 24 hours.
Equipment
Cargo handling equipment include Ship to shore gantry crane (SSG), Mobile Harbour Crane 100 tons, Reach Stacker 45 tons, Front Loader 42 tons, Mobile Cranes 50 and 25 tons, Empty Handler, forklifts 16 tons, 5 tons and 3 tons, Terminal Tractors, Hoppers and Grabs. Marine crafts available at the Port are Tug Boat and Mooring Boat. Mtwara Port is well equipped and prepared to handle all categories of cargo.
Storage
Two main sheds with a total of more than 15,000m2 of covered storage. Paved open storage totaling 124,000sqm including 76,000 sqm constructed in year 2020. Unpaved open storage totals 20,000sqm.
Present Capacity
Mtwara port can handle 1,000,000 metric tons of imports and exports per annum. The port is mainly designed to handle conventional and containerised cargo.

Lake Victoria Ports
The major ports in Lake Victoria are the Mwanza South Port and Mwanza North Port. Both Ports are connected to road and railway in the country and neighboring countries and have many facilities including Weighbridge, Oil tanks, Workshops and Passenger Lounge to support various operations within the Lake. Apart from these Two Main ports, the Lake has got many other Ports which work together to facilitate different services within Lake Victoria.

Tanga and Other Northern Sea Ports
The Port of Tanga was built in 1914 initially to serve the commercial and agricultural needs of northern Tanzania, it is the longest-serving port in East Africa. A 354-km highway links it to its sister port Dar es Salaam in the South. Tanga port is situated on the northern coast of Tanzania.
Port Characteristics
Generally, each port is unique in terms of its characteristics which in turn can have major influences on port performance and efficiency. The following are the characteristics of Tanga port.
- It is strategically located to serve the northern Regions of Tanga, Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Manyara, the lake zone, and neighboring countries of Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Southern part of Uganda.
- It has a wide and deep entrance channel that can accommodate a vessel of any size and draft/draught.
- It has no tide restrictions for vessels entering or leaving the port
- It has a natural and well-sheltered bay for shipping services
Port Facilities
- The port of Tanga has a modern quay wall with total length of 450 meters covering berth one and two. Currently there are two offshore pipelines with 12 inches are used for handling Liquid bulk (oil products). Also, at the Totten Island there is Conventional Buoy Mooring (CBM) for handling of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) by means of flexible hoses connected to submarine pipelines
- The conventional yard with paved area of 29,000m2

Tanga Port is equipped with Habours Mobile cranes with lifting capacity of 63 tons each, Tugboats, Cargo barges – each with capacity of 3,500 tons, Cargo Lighter with capacity of 600 tons, Pantoons for cargo transfer, Empty Container Handler – 12 tons capacity, Reach stackers for handling of full container with a capacity of 40 tons, Terminal tractor for longitudinal transfer of cargo, Forklifts with bale clamp attachment for handling of sisal fibres, Standard Forklifts:- 4Nos. Forklifts each with a capacity of 3,5, 16 and 25 tons, Terminal Tractors and Trailers, Fire Tender trucks equipped with firefighting equipment, Mooring Boat, Weighbridge for weighing cargo in the port both imports and export, Hoppers and Grabs for handling of bulk cargo.Storage Facilities
Tanga Port has the following storage facilities three cargos sheds for covered storage of weather sensitive cargo.
- Paved area (container yard) for storage of Container and other cargo which does not require covered storage has an area measuring 29,000 square meters.
- Covered storage (sheds) covers an area measuring 13,800 square meters
Port Capacity
The current upgraded capacity is 1,201,000 tons per annum.
